Barrier Removal in Existing Facilities

Where “barrier removal” is undertaken – strictly to address accessibility issues and not part of a renovation – the barrier removal may comply with the requirements of either the 1991 ADA or the 2010 ADA.  It is not necessary for the barrier removal modifications to comply with the current CBC.  After 3/15/2012, barrier removal must comply, to the extent it is readily achievable, with the 2010 ADA.
