Jesse Unruh & the Unruh Act

The Unruh Act, authored by Jesse Unruh, outlaws discrimination based on…any mental or physical disability.

“All persons within the jurisdiction of this state are free an equal, and no matter what their ex, race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, disability, medical condition, marital status, or sexual orientation are entitled to the full and equal accommodations, advantages, facilities, privileges or services in all business establishments of every kind whatsoever.”

The Unruh act was modified in 1992 to include, “Violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 shall also constitute a violation of this section.”

The remarkable thing about the Unruh Act and Jessie Unruh, is that the original act dates from 1959, well before Civil Rights became a significant issue in this country.

Mr. Unruh originated the term, ” Money is the mother’s milk of politics” and also regarding lobbyists, said – “If you can’t eat their food, drink their booze, screw their women, and then vote against them, you have no business being up here.”
